Here’s a Seth Thomas tambour mantel clock I repaired for a customer. It is called “Tambour No. 11, has a mahogany Adamantine finish and is 9 3/8 inches tall and 16 1/4 inches wide. The minute hand is 2 5/16 inches long, with a painted white dial. This clock is shown in the 1922 Seth Thomas catalog on page 21.
Adamantine is a veneer made of celluloid with a wood grain pattern in it. It is applied over the wood case body. This one is beautiful mahogany color. It was also available in golden oak.
Repair job 8878. I overhauled the movement (Seth Thomas No. 89), including polishing or burnishing the pivots, installing 17 bushings, and installing new mainsprings. The time mainwheel teeth were 40% worn down, is I had a new gear ring installed on it. I put in new long, thin mainsprings that will ensure consistent timekeeping over a one-week running time, and prevent future wear to the mainwheel teeth. This will give the clock long life as a family heirloom.
The mainsprings are MS-301 from Ronell Clock, measuring 3/4 by 0.014 by 108 inches. The pendulum bob weighs 5.4 ounces.
If you have a clock such as this that needs repairing, I’ll be happy to work with you. More details are on my website billsclockworks.com.
